Xinran Guan

Xinran Guan was born in Beijing, China, she now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Xinran received her BA from Bard College and BS from Columbia University, and her MFA from LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Art at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Xinran’s approach to abstract painting is inspired by the ambiguous spaces in fairytales, music and nature. Her calligraphic strokes and luminosity create intriguing landscapes that allude to the longing and fear to unknown places found in imagination and dreams. There is the acknowledgement of discord, of chaos, of clashing spaces, planes and colors, and she paints them with an exuberant acknowledgement rather than cold, distant judgment.

Inspired by the Chinese aesthetics of tragedy, Xinran’s recent works focus on personal experiences, such as memory and pain. She uses bits of colors and forms to show the corporeal, and the tender touch to the image is a resolution to accept and face these life challenges with courage and appreciation.
