Sophie Borneck a.k.a So!

Sophie Borneck a.k.a So! was born in 1984 in metropolitan France, at the edge of the Jura forests.

Curious, multi-inspired , she is passionate about all that is offered to her from floral art to painting jobs but So! goes instinctively towards artistic creation.

She loves contemplating, passionate about colors, she paints geometric, organic forms of all tints, exploring techniques and textures by discovering artists of the 20th century as Robert Delauney, Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and the psychedelic creations of Verner Panton, designer.

Dreamy, she thinks about traveling, new encounters...

Expatriated to New Caledonia in 2010, since, she has been strongly influenced by lush nature, braiding, sculptures, fabric, tattoos and of traditional Oceanic art codes, So! starts creating patterns.

Melancholic, since 2014 she has built her work with this desire to talk about her memories and emotions in an instinctive pictorial mode and to invite the pattern as a narrator. So! then creates these strangely named forms: mitochondria.

Bold, in 2016, So! exhibits for the first time. Colors and patterns are present, emotions and memories too, juxtaposed and sometimes linked.

Mesmerized by mitochondria, their creation becomes compulsive. So! is inspired by traveling to Tokyo where she discovers exhibitions and artists like Yayoi Kusama and Takashi Murakami. Surrounded by monumental installations or immersed in the work of Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso, So! comes back bulimic of creation and continues to expose her mitochondria.

Mitochondriac, she continues to cover her world with her mitochondria and dreams of making them traveling. In 2019 she is one of the finalists of BIG AWARDS, her mitochondria leave for Barcelona, then Tokyo, where she is selected for the Shibuya Station Exhibition and leaves with her paintings for a more intimate exhibition at the Design Festa Gallery.

Her painting is today boundary between diary and mental photography; a chronicle of everyday life mixing emotions, encounters and poetry, whose intimacy is the key. She articulates her work between personal creations and her activities in local cultural life, uncompromisingly depicting life, her life, her emotions and her memories in the midst of nature.

So! lives and works today in New Caledonia.

MITOCHONDRIAC, the collection :

Mitochondria: part of the animal or vegetal cell that transmits genetic material from parents to children.

Working on the accumulation of patterns and keeping her own obsessions trotting out, So! Paints her first Mitochondria in 2014. Since that day, she continues the collection she made evolve as time went by, trying to drain its initial form thanks to automatic fabrication.

The minuscule world getting on to the ensemble, Mitochondria are imagined as inside landscapes, a colorful and lively analysis of the present fabrication of the painting, as if it was a self-portrait or an intimate exploration.

Created in a kind of trance, close to hypnosis, from the color flat tint to the movement, Mitochondria, unique and singular units, end up building unconscious images, coming from their gathering.

They become hypnagogic and are interpreted by the viewer as clouds can be when they create shapes that are obviously clear, just before disappearing, as a memory that changes as time flies, and that never stops evolving.

For it’s really the idea that jeopardize Mitochondria: the memory and its transmission, the proliferating and essential lifeblood of the living cell, both unique and universal.
