Paméla Maria

Artist statement:

I go back and forth between wanting to be abundantly simple and maddeningly complex in ‘creating the indescribable':
moments that enthral and challenge me with a stream of wondering and questions that continue to build over time: beauty, pain, desire, lost, struggle,... Aspects of reality which cannot be fully articulated through language.

About the work:

Nature is an important source of inspiration. My eye is captured by details in the (urban) landscape. Zooming in on the endless wealth of colour shades, patterns, structures, light. The works depict how these impressions slide over each other and yield new compositions. Details where color and light on the skin of things is characteristic for the translation of reality. This is used intuitively, but especially investigative.

The reliëfs are made with yarn and painted paper/photo's that portray landscapes and the sea. The seemingly flat surface changes into a relief with several dimensions. The yarn picks up details, directs the eye and adds a third dimension’.
The works are autonomous in their appearance and betray the character of the maker through their quirky handwriting.
 for example:
-The works ‘Into the woods’ and Reflections IV are inspired by how the water and the air influence each other.
-The ‘Rainy days' works are made with acrylic painted paper and yarn in many shades of blue or green that portray the beauty of grey, wet days. Everything is light, we are surrounded by beauty. Nature is always beautiful.
-‘Moving colours' is based on tree stands of plane trees.
-The 'Crocus and Narcissus' series is inspired by the structure of, sometimes modified, landscapes.
-The series 'Vertical City' and 'Twilight' are rooted in the strict rhythm of (office) facades where the idea of space or foreground/background is not defined by shape or color, but only by the texture.
-The paintings express, in a more expressionistic way than the reliëfs, how my impressions of details slide over each other, layer over layer.

Background:

Paméla Maria (1965) has been drawing ever since she was a child. She studied classical arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hasselt (Belgium) between her 13th and 18th year, and obtained her certificate in 1983.

She then studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, first studying at the textile department and then at the environmental design department, obtaining her certificate in 1989.

In 1990, she received a starting grant from the Dutch Government via the Fund for Visual Arts, Architecture and Design for the further development of her work.
She attended the Domus Academy Milano, Italy summer course of 1994.

In the subsequent years, Paméla worked as a designer and consultant for various Dutch municipal authorities
From 1992 to 1997 she worked for O'tje Oxenaar at the KPN Art and Design department and was (co-)responsible for the corporate identity.

In 1998 Paméla chose to focus on her original passion: the visual arts. Her background as a designer can be recognised in her artworks: the ease with which she works with various materials; the perfection; the graphic character; the investigative and experimental character of her work, the photographic eye.

Since then she takes part in (group)-exhibitions at galleries and fairs in the Netherlands and abroad. She does art projects for companies and works on private commissions.
